Christmas Day in Australia. Turkey, ham, the plum pudding set alight then eaten with brandy butter. A tree decorated with tinsel and coloured lights and little wafts of cotton to look like snow. Carols about reindeers and sleigh rides through snow which lay all about. And then we go to the beach for a swim. [...]

Holiday + Staycation + Beer = Beerstaycation
It’s always a bit of a drama trying to work out where to go and how to get to that little getaway at the end of the year. If you want to head out and get the most out of the holiday season, why not do it in local style — given that most vacancies [...]

Cairo, Fabulous Chaos
Chaos. Complete chaos. And yet with some kind of unspoken rule and unexpected courtesy. It’s the only way I can begin to describe driving around Cairo. There are no lane markings on the roads – why bother when nobody is likely to take any notice? It’s more like a mass of angled, battered dodgem cars, ducking and weaving; no indicators, only waving hands and tooting horns which have a language of their own: one toot, three toots, a long blast.

In Praise of the Boxing Day Test Match
After the madness of Christmas, there’s nothing quite like sitting in the shade on a hot summer day, eating cold turkey sandwiches, reading the paper and chatting with friends. And if the venue happens to be in Melbourne, at the grand Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), and there’s a cricket game in action – all the better.

Getting Steamy in Europe
In the absence of hot water to submerge in, I find lolling in steam a good alternative. Great for the skin, relaxing for the muscles and all-round soothing to the soul. Unless, of course, you’re in Russia. In which case it can just be traumatic (although very relaxing in hindsight). The following are a few of my adventures in steam. Honestly, some were more adventurous than others. And if you’re not comfortable with public nudity, these are not the travel experiences for you…

Linz: A Guide to Europe’s 2009 Capital of Culture
Linz, the third-largest city in Austria, is the European Capital of Culture in 2009. It’s no wonder the city is gearing up for the occasion with new cultural centres, a year-long program of events, and big big spending on the arts. And that – spending on the arts – is always a reason to celebrate in my book!
Suggested Itineraries: Belize
It’s Better in Belize. You Better Belize It. It’s Unbelizeable. If I had a nickel for each time I saw a Belize-inspired T-shirt, I’d have at least 60 cents by now. Maybe a buck. The problem is not a lack of T-shirts. Trust me, there are heaps on sale in Belize. The problem is that Belize is one of those places that refuses to become mainstream.
