God is My Copilot
God is my pilot, and copilot, and navigator… I’m not a frequent reader of christiantoday.com, but I did find this story illuminating (uplifting? enlightening?): apparently the Vatican has just launched its own low-cost airline. It’s billed as the “first-ever Roman Catholic airline” with service from Rome to the world-famous pilgrimage site of Lourdes (more destinations [...]

Madrid with Kid
There are not too many places – so we were told – better to travel with a baby than Spain. Still, my wife and I were feeling low-level anxiety as we arrived at our apartment in Madrid‘s Sol district for five days of intentionally unplanned vacation time. The loooooong flight from Australia was a week [...]

City Break: Barcelona
Barcelona has to be one of the coolest cities to visit in the Mediterranean. It’s certainly one of my favourites, and it’s large enough for several days’ sightseeing, as well as a decent base for exploring nearby towns on a day trip. What follows are the highlights from my visit last year, which would make [...]

Zurich’s All Right!
I went to Switzerland by train – highly recommended. The scenery is so beautiful and the mountains majestic. Roads and railways fight each other for the narrow valley spaces. It was summer, June, and the highest mountains still had snow on them. Later, I was amazed to discover that not only were all the clocks at Zurich‘s main train station showing the same time, but that all the clocks at all the stations in Switzerland had the same time!

A Day in the Pyrenees
Editor’s note: Despite being somebody who “doesn’t do tours,” Jodi surprised herself by having a great time on a day trip to the Pyrenees from Barcelona. “It’s a great way to get out of the city, with everything arranged for you. There is no stress and plenty of time for independent exploration or lazing about.” [...]
Munich in 3 Days
As a big fan of side trips, I made a plan to add a Munich jaunt to my upcoming Italy tour. I’ve managed to squeeze in three days of sightseeing in Germany before heading off to Rome and Tuscany. And with what I’ve got planned, and much like Liz’s ambitious three-day weekend series, I might [...]

Rome, Italy On the evening of September 8th, Rome will hold its fifth installment of the popular “La Notte Bianca” event. In essence, this event is one night when Rome puts all it has to offer on display. All across the city there are attractions showcasing the finest in the arts, dining, and culture. Personally [...]

Oktoberfest 2007 – Munich, Germany
Oktoberfest is by a long way the largest beer festival – in fact, one of the largest festivals of any kind – in the world, attracting annually around six million visitors. For two weeks every year, the area of Munich known as the Wiesn (“the meadow”) is turned into a sparkling temporary city made of [...]

Cool Job Title: Bridge Guard
One winter saw me taking up the fantastically esoteric position of “Bridge Guard,” for a recently reconstructed bridge over the Danube River on the border of Hungary and Slovakia. Destroyed at the end of the Second World War, the bridge was rebuilt in 2001, reconnecting the town of Stúrovo (pop 13,000) to Esztergom (pop 30,000). [...]
