Four tourists in coordinating Hawaiian Christmas ensembles asked us how we were able to balance as we scooted past during our Honolulu Segway Tour. My answer: you don’t really have to think about balancing, you just stand and the machine balances for you. This was my second time on a Segway and I found I really didn’t have to think at all. A quick refresher course and we were off and rolling.

Snobbish travelers and sophisticated expats living abroad often sniff at the spectacle of tour groups mounted on Segway PTs (two-wheeled, computer-balanced, electrically-powered vehicles that users operate while standing up), issuing forth amid popular tourist destinations in Europe and elsewhere, appearing somewhat like a row of ducklings, waddling along behind their mother – er, guide. However, the scoffs of the skeptics often turn into whines about sore feet and wasted legs after they’ve attempted to cover as much ground in a day as their ambulatory objects of scorn manage at a leisurely pace in the space of just a few short hours.

I believe the best way to see a city is through the soles of your feet. But after lifting those feet a few inches off the ground on the San Francisco Waterfront Segway Tour I have to say walking has some serious competition.

As a DC local, it is not an uncommon site to see Segway tours going around the city – my office is two blocks from the National Mall and I jog around the monuments several times a week. After years of seeing these tours and snickering at them (all the while secretly jealous), my friend and I decided to bite the bullet and be tourists in our own city.
