It’s 6:05am in Sydney and I slowly open my eyes to see a bright orange glow around the window blinds. It’s eerie – like a scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I open the blind and am greeted by a magical orange world. It’s like a Fanta fog has descended on the neighbourhood.

As a general rule, children and cities don’t tend to mix. A family holiday can be far less stressful when it’s restricted to a resort or quiet countryside area. But there are some cities in the world that are jam-packed with child-friendly attractions and activities. Singapore, Sydney, London, Copenhagen & Los Angeles are arguably the world best five.

You think Sydney, you think the beach. And you’d be right. There are about 150 beaches in the Sydney metropolitan area! The city’s spread along a long coastline fronting the Pacific Ocean, full of coves and rivers, ocean pools and surf, cliffs and treacherous waves. It’s spectacular and awesome and chilled out, all at the same time. And as winter starts to release its grip in Australia and we head into summer (remember summer in Australia starts in December!) I've created a Sydney beach guide to get you in the mood for the next Australian summer.

So, I had one day in Sydney – what to do? For starters I booked into a hotel in the middle of the city, the CBD. I figured that would be close to everything important – Opera House, the harbour, Darling Harbour etc. Of course, to be within budget, I had to find one at the dodgy end of town – up near Central Railway Station, away from the Harbour.

If you find yourself in Sydney next week (March 7 - 15), you're very luck indeed. The city is celebrating its annual Harbour Week Festival, with more than 350 events in, on, around, over and even under Sydney's iconic harbour. The big events are the Sydney Harbour Regatta (March 7 - 9), when more than 350 yachts compete and thousands of spectators gather harbour-side to watch (the event is free to watch).

After the madness of Christmas, there’s nothing quite like sitting in the shade on a hot summer day, eating cold turkey sandwiches, reading the paper and chatting with friends. And if the venue happens to be in Melbourne, at the grand Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), and there’s a cricket game in action – all the better.

Berlin: M10 Tram from S Nordbahnhof to S+U Warschauer Strasse. I love this Berlin tram line because, no matter what time of day or night you travel between Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain, it's always running. Get on board at 4am next to Dr Pong, the ping pong club near Eberswalderstrasse, and it feels like you've stepped into a party: the kids are out in punk, goth and clubbing gear, and it's apparently legal to drink beer on the tram. Or if it isn't, no-one stops you.

For almost everyone in world getting to Australia takes a long time. Sure, it’s no longer necessary to hang your head over the ship’s rail for a month or more, as visitors from the mother country (that’s England, for the history-challenged among you) routinely did until just 40 years ago. But a flight time that [...]

Editor’s Note: Luke posted this last year for his mum. We thought it nicely captures the spirit of Mother’s Day, so we are re-posting Luke’s original ode today in honor of moms (and mums) everywhere. Fighting my way to Sydney airport on Easter Thursday evening — along with 20,000 other travellers, dropper-offers and picker-uppers — I [...]
