February 9, 2012 by

Australia & the Pacific, Contests & Giveaways

Editor’s Note: This contest is now closed. Stay tuned for the winner!

For three weeks only beginning March 2012, one of the world’s greatest operas, Verdi’s La Traviata, will be performed in Sydney’s stunning Harbour. Set on a floating stage in one of the world’s most scenic natural theatres, this bold theatrical presentation is the first time this opera has ever been performed on water in Australia. And this month one lucky reader will win two tickets to the spectacular Opera Performance on Sydney Harbour!

Win tickets to see La Traviata on Sydney Harbour!

About the Performance

Extravagant and incredibly romantic, La Traviata is perfect for first-time opera-goers. Featuring a full orchestra, magnificent sets, gorgeous costumes and special effects, the opera promises to be summer’s highlight event.

La Traviata tells of a ‘fallen woman’ who finds love too late and its success rests heavily on the performance of the soprano in the title role. While already a challenging role for any accomplished opera singer, soprano Rachelle Durkin will need to sing her lines while dangling in a glass cage attached to a giant chandelier that is suspended high above Sydney Harbour.

Big crowds are expected during the show’s duration and special seating is being built at Mrs Macquarie’s Point in The Domain, next to the Royal Botanic Gardens. It’s a favourite spot for taking in the views of Sydney Harbour, its famous bridge and Opera House.

Opera Australia is Australia’s national opera company and Sydney performances are normally held in the iconic Sydney Opera House. This will be the first opera performed that will afford views of the Opera’s House’s famous exterior.
