Until you have tried Hot Air Ballooning, you really can’t have any idea of what a surreal experience it is. I certainly didn’t. I was totally unprepared for the other-worldly nature of the flight, the eerie quiet, the beauty of seeing other balloons in flight near us, and the very different view of our world that’s available from just a few thousand feet overhead.
Viator offers Hot Air Balloon tours in 20-odd destinations worldwide, and the nature of these destinations and their surrounding geography means a very different experience in each one. While I was a Hot Air virgin before I went aloft in Phoenix recently, I now can’t wait to try it in Luxor, Egypt, where I can only imagine the view of the pyramids is pretty mind-blowing, and Barcelona, where the urban landscape is so intriguing, or Port Douglas, where the rainforest comes down to meet the Barrier Reef.
Looking back on the tour, the thing I liked best was that so much about ballooning is unchanged from its earliest days. Two French brothers, the Montgolfier’s, got things going back in 1782; the experience of those early balloon riders is not much changed from the experience you can enjoy today. The beautiful and colorful balloons, the wicker baskets and the lovely little balloonist’s prayer, said on your arrival back on the ground, are all much as they were 200 years ago. That’s unusual nowadays, and well worth the effort to experience for yourself.
Here’s the Balloonists Prayer. Origin is unknown, but its been around a long time!
The Balloonist’s PrayerThe winds have welcomed you with softness. The sun has blessed you with his warm hands. You have flown so high and so well that God joined you in laughter and set you gently back into the loving arms of Mother Earth.
