Meet Viator’s November Customer of the Month, Nathan Macdonald!

Nathan and his wife traveled to the US this past September to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. They had a blast celebrating in Illinois on the  Tastes of Chicago Bike Tour .

Why did you take this tour/take this trip?

We were celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary so we decided to visit the USA because we traveled to the USA for our honeymoon and we loved it and wanted to see some places we hadn’t been to before.
We took this tour because it was the first time either one of us had been to Chicago. We thought it would be a unique way to see different areas of Chicago that we would like to go back to during our brief stay.

What did you see and do?

Our bike tour was a 20+ kilometer (13-14 miles) journey that saw us start on Lake Shore Drive, head into the city, go through Lincoln Park, all the way up to Wrigleyville then back up along Lake Michigan to our start point. Along the way stopping for some deep dish pizza, some Chicago style hotdogs, cupcakes and some beer samples from the different local breweries. We had plenty of chances for photos and it was never too much riding without a break.

We certainly did a lot of things on this trip that we always planned on doing on our previous trips overseas. We went to Disneyland, camped out at the Gorge amphitheater in Seattle to see the Dave Matthews Band. We hired a cabana and lounged by the pool at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas then hired a table at one of the nightclubs. We went to Wrigley Field in Chicago and saw a Cubs game, along with seeing many other Chicago sites on our bike tour. We also had a few nights in New York and took a day trip to Washington DC (also planned through Viator). Our final stop was New Orleans and we really got into the atmosphere and soul of the area, resulting in us visiting all the pubs along Bourbon Street until the early hours of the morning.

What was your favorite experience?

For our first wedding anniversary we started the day with a nice private breakfast at the top of the Sears tower (booked through Viator), and after this we went to the Cubs game at Wrigley Field. To my wife’s surprise I had organized a happy anniversary message to be displayed on the scoreboard during the 7th inning. Later that day we went to the RPM restaurant in Chicago for a nice romantic dinner. They gave us complimentary champagne and the food was amazing. It was the perfect day and one that we will never forget. The entire bike tour is still something we talk about. We both had such a great time. We were part of a small group with my wife and I volunteering to be at the back of the group to make sure we didn’t lose anyone. Because we were at the back, we had to wear high visibility vests, which gave us a good laugh. We knew we looked ridiculous but we were having such a fun time that we didn’t even care. We even wore them with pride for a photo with the Lincoln Statue.

What do you love about traveling?

The fact that so much planning and hype always goes in to every trip and it is never a letdown. We met several people on our holiday and we stay in contact with many of them to this day. It is so relaxing to let your hair down, relax and have fun in another part of the world.

What other destinations have been some of your favorites?

Chicago is our favorite city, closely followed by Hawaii, Las Vegas and New Orleans

Why do you book tours with Viator?

We decided to book with Viator because we knew it was going to be reliable. It was great being able to read other people’s reviews and see their photos, it allowed us to decide if that was what we wanted to do on our vacation.

What are you best tips for traveling like an insider?

Try and travel on public transport whenever you can. It allows you to feel like you belong in the city and you can pick up on all the little differences between your home city and wherever you are in the world. Also take advice from the locals, we found so many great restaurants that we never would have found if we hadn’t spoken to locals.

Why did you choose this trip/this tour to celebrate your anniversary?

We thought this was a cool idea for our anniversary because we are both active people, but we also love indulging in pizza, beer and cupcakes. As soon as we both saw the tour on Viator we knew it was something that we just had to do. We knew it would be something different, we would learn about Chicago and we knew that we would have fun, which we certainly did.
